On our desk, we've been tracking the sharp move in FLOT's short interest, which jumped 75.2% in July up to nearly 2.6 million shares. While 1.5% of shares shorted with a days-to-cover ratio of just 1.3 days isn't an immediate crisis, it signals growing tactical positioning or hedging against the backdrop of changing Federal Reserve expectations. Even with the Fed contemplating rate cuts, the instrument remains a heavily utilized, liquid parking spot for investment-grade credit exposure.
Looking at the structural design from a risk management standpoint, FLOT tracks the Bloomberg US Floating Rate Note < 5 Years Index with coupons resetting quarterly to SOFR plus a fixed spread. Because of this, it carries an effective duration near zero, meaning price drawdowns seen in aggregate bond funds like AGG and BND are avoided. However, analysts caution that while market risk is minimal during normal conditions, severe liquidity events could still introduce unexpected downward pressure on the fund's valuation.
When evaluating short-term portfolio allocations for our clients, we look closely at FLOT's asset composition—primarily FRNs issued by AAA Supranationals and top-tier commercial banks. The probability of credit loss is exceptionally remote, and its historical performance has reliably outpaced CPI. For mandates requiring high credit quality, minimal volatility, and a modest yield premium over T-bills without taking on substantial duration risk, FLOT functions as a reliable anchor.
