As a risk manager tracking KORU, I am deeply concerned by the 102.8% surge in short interest to over 31.4 million shares by the end of July. With short interest consuming roughly 37.7% of the shares, the days-to-cover ratio sits tight at 0.7 days. This dramatic build in short positioning reflects aggressive bearish bets amid ongoing technical breakdowns, cyclical semiconductor risks, and historically weak seasonal trends spanning August to October.
Looking at the macroeconomic backdrop, foreign and large institutional capital are selectively exiting the domestic stock market. Even when semiconductor manufacturers perform well, governance discounts, insufficient legal protections, physical spin-offs, and controlling shareholder-centric management are driving capital away toward the US, Japan, or stable bonds and gold. This structural capital flight undercuts any lasting buy-and-hold thesis for KORU.
From a quantitative perspective, the divergence between KORU's one-year return of 2,108% and its five-year return of just 165% is a textbook warning label. Leveraged ETFs like KORU compound upward only during persistent, one-directional trends. In a roller-coaster market characterized by SK Hynix earnings misses, 20-minute trading halts on the KOSPI index down over 8%, and extreme volatility exceeding Bitcoin, negative compounding heavily punishes retail holders.
As an analyst examining market structure, the volatility in South Korea's stock rally has been artificially fueled by government policies pushing household savings into domestic equities while trying to curb overseas outflows. However, when a crowded trade meets 3x leverage during a global chip rout—exacerbated by SK Hynix missing Wall Street expectations and U.S. markets becoming tightly intertwined with Korean equities—the velocity of the drawdown is exceptionally punishing.
On our trading desk, we evaluate KORU strictly as a short-term tactical vehicle rather than an investment asset. Technical analysts like Mike Zaccardi have issued sell ratings due to underlying technical weakness and bearish patterns in EWY, which is heavily concentrated in Samsung and SK Hynix. Any consideration for a tactical buy should be tightly bound to specific downside retracement levels, such as filling the April price gap near $125 on the underlying index.
