Invesco SandP 500 Equal Weight Consumer Discretionary ETF (RSPD)

On our desk, we are monitoring the Discretionary-to-Staples ratio closely as it just broke to its lowest level since June, echoing historical warning signs seen prior to major market pullbacks. Even though the SandP 500 hits all-time highs, this relative weakness in RSPD against staples suggests underlying cyclical caution that macro allocators cannot ignore.

Looking at RSPD from a quantitative portfolio construction lens, the equal-weight methodology sounds appealing on paper for diversification, but it continuously trails market-cap alternatives like IVV. The forward EPS, revenue, and EBITDA growth rates just do not measure up, and its GARP profile remains unconvincing despite a higher earnings yield.

From a risk management standpoint, RSPD has disappointed by failing to generate superior risk-adjusted returns relative to IVV or XLY. Its standard deviation is surprisingly high for an equal-weight basket in this sector, complicating our risk modeling and limiting its upside potential as a standalone allocation.

Sentiment on the retail sector is bifurcated. While the Q2 U.S. Retail Preview highlights a massive 231.1% surge in Broadline Retail earnings growth driven by consumer resilience, this strength is heavily concentrated, meaning RSPD's equal-weight exposure might not capture these specific high-growth leaders as efficiently as cap-weighted funds.

Our short interest tracking shows RSPD short interest dropped significantly by 46.5% down to 26,803 shares (representing just 0.49% of the float) with a days-to-cover ratio of 0.3. This tiny short footprint indicates that bearish conviction is not currently being expressed via direct shorting of the ETF wrapper itself.
