On our desk, we are scratching our heads over the disconnect between surging AI power demands and URA's 39% drop since January 2026. While the DOE just committed $17.5 billion to new reactors, the ETF has stayed flat or down year-to-date. Retail investors expected direct exposure to the nuclear renaissance, but the wrapper is too leaky for my taste.
Watching the 50-day MA and historical drawdowns on URA, the numbers look sobering. Data shows that out of 15 steep declines tracked since 2010, the median twelve-month return following a significant dip is negative 4%. This current correction has already exceeded the five-year average drawdown depth by about nine percentage points, signaling caution rather than an automatic bargain.
Our quantitative desk flags a fascinating mid-channel oscillation pattern right now. Even though sentiment metrics flash positive signals, our risk models point to a high risk-reward short setup if the broader macro headwinds and developer froth continue to weigh down the underlying miner equities like Cameco.
From a fundamental allocation perspective, you have to look at what is inside the fund wrapper. URA features roughly 23% in Cameco and only about 5% direct uranium, spreading significant weight into construction and engineering names. If an investor wants pure uranium beta to feed spot price gains directly into NAV, alternatives like URNM or SPUT look far more appealing.
Evaluating the tax implications in our taxable portfolio accounts, swapping out of URA is tricky. Because of its 167% five-year return history, liquidating the entire position risks triggering massive capital gains taxes. Partial reallocation makes much more sense than a wholesale exit, even if URA is currently lagging behind physical-heavy funds.
When running risk management scenarios on URA, we have to respect the duration of this drawdown. It is running more than twice its historical average duration, and with potential Kazakh supply surges and macro volatility looming, holding unhedged equity exposure in construction-heavy nuclear ETFs carries too many unpriced structural risks.
